How do I teach online? Is the schedule flexible?
There is a video call using Google meet, zoom or another platform with yourself and 2 students to meet virtually and learn together!
1. A student chooses a time slot according to your available schedule set by you.
2. The student will message you, request the time and mention their learning goals.
3. You start the video call and send the link to the students' contact/ email.
It is flexible to fit in with your schedule! :)
Do I need to follow a lesson plan or curriculum?
These lessons are designed to be relaxed and stress free!
There is no set curriculum that you are required to follow, however
there are plenty of free resources available for teachers (I have been using these myself for a long time now!)
Feel free to browse these on the "resources" page.
Feel free to use your own resources and discrepancy, please be very sensitive to possible cultural differences, age appropriate and level of difficulty!
Thank you.
What do I do if I need to reschedule or cancel a lesson?
Contact directly to the student as soon as you can.
Please be aware of the time difference, so please don't cancel inside an 8 hour time frame.
If it is less than 8 hours please try to honor your scheduled time as if it were a paid tuition, however we understand that life happens and you can't read the future, so please don't stress!
Just contact the student.
How do we overcome language barriers?
- Don't worry! That's the point of these helpful classes.
- Use google translate (share your screen).
- Adjust the speed of your speaking to mirror the students'.
- Use pictures (share screen).
- Use examples (KISS - Keep it short & sweet)
- Your listening skills will sharpen over time and you will be able to hear clearer and clearer!
- Avoid colloquial language, idioms, slang if it is not common or current. Or have fun explaining the meaning! ;) ;)
Do I need to turn on the camera to teach online?
It is very helpful for students to see / lip read, because over a call can be a challenge to hear people when English is not your first language!
However, this is not a rule, just a friendly request.
(It is still up to you.)
How can we help education in developing countries?
As individuals we can get involved in helping students reach their potential in their studies as they are the next generation who can then make more positive changes!
We can support organisations who are committed to addressing these issues. The United Nations (UN), Save the children and more.
How can I make a difference as a teacher?
Time invested into a person's education is time invested into a precious life and future!
A teacher can spark a student to become a lifelong learner.
Your influence, support and encouragement can be the difference between a student giving up or persevering through 'till the end.
Do I need a teaching degree /certificate to teach English online?
Teachers are not required to have any teaching degree or certificates.
We do ask for a Working with children's check, a CV and/or reference and that there are more than 2 minors on a video call, eg; 1 teacher: 2 students.
How can I help in a sustainable way? How do I know the projects are sustainable?
Investing in the life of a student and their future creates a multiplication effect that is lasting far beyond your hourly contribution.
Supporting the family business financially is another way to ensure the students have enough basic needs met and can dedicate more time to their studies rather than working extra hours and falling behind.
Families receive training in their farming or family business when funds have been given.
Is this a nonprofit?
YES. Absolutely. We don't charge students a cent.
100% of donations go directly to Centre of Hope Ministry (CHM) Cambodia to feed those in need, give emergency relief packages, support families with care packages, provide education resources, and provides discipleship programs. CHM partners with We Connect to Learn.
What percentage of money donated goes directly to the projects?
100% goes to Centre of Hope Ministry which is partnering with We Connect to Learn.
Because there are 0 overhead costs.
All efforts are done by volunteers so there's no admin costs.
There is no advertisement.
Are donations tax-deductible?
No as the charity is only registered in Cambodia not in Australia.
How do we meet?
We will organise a group call to introduce you to the students for the first time (using google meet or zoom).
What kind of support is there for teachers?
There is support for teachers. We can help you and if you want, we will join with you on your first calls until you feel confident.
If you require additional resources that are not on the resources page, eg. after getting to know your student you need something else, message us on our web-page and we can organise tailored resources for you.
